I have been making progress on my computer case mod that will allow me to paint one of the panels. I have been testing a handful of adhesives on wood as a precursor to metal testing. From Michael’s I got two types of E6000 adhesives. The small tubes worked well but didn’t have enough to cover everything I needed and the spray, even if heavily applied, just wasn’t strong enough. Some searching later had me arrive at the Clear Gorilla Glue, which seems to be working well. The canvas could still be ripped off with enough effort but general wear and tear should not cause a problem. I have a metal sheet queued for delivery so I can double check that the Gorilla glue will work just as well on metal.

My glues

In addition to seeing how these glues work I need to see how these new panels will paint. For this I need to prime the canvas I have attached to the wood panels with some acrylic gesso. The glue that soaked through the canvas does show up in the first layer but I believe two or three more layers will entirely hide that and make a nice smooth painting surface.

Priming time!

To make sure these panels are not wasted I have purchased some wood conditioner and oil finisher to improve the appearance of the basswood panels. Along with this I have some picture hooks that get glued to the back (most of these panels were too thin for screws).

As for the final painting I have started the process of sketching out ideas for what I want to actually paint. Right now I am still leaning towards a Malone under a street lamp with some rain happening. My first sketch of this didn’t turn out that well, the proportions and flow were all wrong. After looking at some reference photos of streetlights I think I have a way to improve the composition.
