Over the holidays I took advantage of a trip to my brother’s shop to use his saw to square up my poorly cut panels. More progress didn’t happen until I got back to my apartment though. I did have one addendum to the project. My Mom’s mom also had a camera that would complete the set on her wall. So I hopped on Ebay to find a busted TLR camera that resembled my Grandma’s camera (no point in mounting a working camera).
After the Rolleicord showed up it was the time for the next step, planning. I already had the red stain but no finisher I could safely use in an apartment. After some research it seemed like the best option was water based wipe on poly. A trip to the hardware store for the poly and brushes it was time to lay everything out to see how I would want the cameras presented.
During the laying out process I started pivoting the process once more. As the above photo shows, I was missing a camera and I didn’t want to buy another one. Further, holding some of the panels up to where I wanted to mount them made me realize that it would be cramped with 6 cameras. Also the Lomo’instant Automat would look very samesy with its red on red scheme. So while I was visiting the hardware store I also got some ebony stains.
Drilling presented another challenge for me, as my drill could only dill the small hole. The larger hole in the back that acts as a sink for the screw heads stopped my drill at the start. So another trip to the hardware store for a more powerful plugin in drill. The new drill was almost too good, it ate the wood like it was nothing. Preparations, thankfully, meant I did not drill through the plank.
Next steps are stain and finish.
The wipe on poly was amazingly glossy, exactly what I was looking for. I did two layers of poly, a light sanding, and then a final layer of poly. After letting that set for a couple days it was the same bracket and mount process I did over the holidays.
The black background was the right change for the Automat camera.
Similarly the cameras look great mounted above my record player. Matching the same pops of red. For those curious about the painting in the middle of Einstein, it is a painting called E=MC² by David Garibaldi
Finally, there is the Rolleicord that will eventually pass along to my Mom.
Looks great!
I love Mom’s camera mounted next to dad’s and my own. Now gracing a wall in my house.
Thank you Jennifer!
